Querétaro campus: 250 to nearly 1,000 MW

The expansion of a six-building data center campus shows why phased growth is planned from the start.
CloudHQ raised the investment in its six-data-center campus in Querétaro from US$4.8 billion to about US$6 billion, and planned power capacity rises from 250 MW to nearly 1,000 MW, Mexico Industry reported on October 6, 2026. According to the same report, the delivery schedule remains on track. The figures refer to the project’s planned capacity, not to infrastructure already in operation.
Growing beside a live facility
A campus that quadruples its capacity does not enter service in a single event. Each building is constructed, tested and energised while earlier ones already carry load. That turns the electrical works into a continuous expansion of a system in service, and moves several decisions into the first-phase design.
Editorial analysis
Shared infrastructure is planned for final capacity
As a planning principle, the substation and medium-voltage switchgear can be sized, or prepared for growth, in the initial detailed design even when the first phase uses only a fraction. The alternative is to modify completed installations whenever a building is added. This is an editorial reading of phased projects, not a description of the design of the campus mentioned.
Protection and testing at every phase
Adding transformers and sources changes the system’s fault current, and with it the settings that allow a fault to be isolated without affecting the rest of the facility. Protection coordination is therefore reviewed at each stage. Testing and commissioning of new equipment are scheduled with the existing load in service, which calls for procedures and work windows agreed with the site operator.
Which milestones deserve attention
A project of this scale requires electrical infrastructure, telecommunications, specialised maintenance and construction over several years. Following its progress means distinguishing investment announcements from physical progress: construction start for each building, energisation of each phase and confirmed operation. These are different milestones and should be documented separately.
