Lithium Battery Renewal
Backup power technology renewal across 13 telecommunications sites, with a scope covering the replacement of 45 battery banks with 1,000 Ah lithium battery banks.
Grupo Arcondec carried out a backup power renewal project for a telecommunications network spanning northern, central and southeastern Mexico. Work took place at operational sites and was organised in stages within maintenance windows.
The documented scope covers removal of 45 existing 1,520 Ah battery banks and installation of 45 new 1,000 Ah lithium battery banks. Work includes power connections, cable tray support modifications, grounding, connection labelling and the initial charge of each bank using a temporary power plant.
Execution lasted six months, with pauses between stages, and delivery in 2025. The scope covers 13 sites across Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, Guerrero, Querétaro, Mexico City and Quintana Roo.
Quantities describe the scope listed in installation Annex C, reference 124-1025. Ampere-hour capacities refer to the removed banks and the new lithium banks; they are not presented as a comparison of runtime or performance between the two technologies.
The challenge
Replacing backup power at operational sites required planning each intervention within an authorised maintenance window. The sequence had to coordinate battery removal, new connections, support modifications and initial charging within the allotted time. Logistics across 13 sites added complexity, with one to six banks per location and pauses between stages. The objective was to protect service continuity during the technology transition.
The Arcondec solution
Multisite planning. Coordination of staged interventions and maintenance windows, with a removal, installation, connection and initial charging sequence for each location.
Removal and installation. Removal of existing 1,520 Ah banks, horizontal and vertical handling, area cleaning and installation of 1,000 Ah lithium battery banks.
Power connections. Modification of existing cabling and connections using 4/0 AWG two-hole lugs with 1/2-inch holes and heat-shrink sleeves.
Cable tray supports. Modification of existing cable tray supports to adapt cable routes to the new battery bank configuration.
Grounding and identification. Grounding of each bank using size 2 conductors and two-hole lugs, with connection labelling.
Initial charging. Initial charging of new banks with a temporary power plant supplied by the provider as part of backup system commissioning.
